Get to Know Howe in NovemberThis is a featured page

Tim at the Wolfgangsee It was getting dark as we drove into Strobl on the legendary Wolfgangssee, only to find just about every single hostel, inn, cafe and goodness-knows-what shut. "Betriebsferien vom 01 bis 27.11", it said everywhere. It might just as well have said "Get Lost!".

Funny - Austria shutting up shop the very week of the Bavarian
Herbstferien. Isn't it supposed to be the ginormous German powerhouse that fuels the economy of its head-in-the-clouds diminuitive neighbour? Talk about biting the hand that feeds you!

Luckily we were renting a house with a lovely big kitchen, so we didn't have to worry about finding either a roof over our heads or a place to eat. In fact, we had the loveliest week you could imagine: Clear blue skies and temperatures around 21 degrees! With hardly any tourists in town and most Austrians sweating away in their Büros, we had the mountain top and lakeside virtually to ourselves.

Traditionally dull and gray, November pulled out all the stops to please us. Life is full of joys that money can't buy. And just when you least expect them, too.
